lizards drop their tails

Autotomy or Autotomisation - This is when a lizard ''drops'' its tail. This is a defence for them in the wild - if they get crept up on by a predator and it catches the tail, or if the tail gets damaged in any way, the lizard constricts its muscles in the tail and the tail ''drops off'' (very simple terms!). The lizard is then able to grow a new tail back, it doesn't always look or feel the same, but it's a functioning tail. NB: Not all lizards can drop their tails and grow one back, some break off and never grow back, like crested geckos as an example.
